Pool Party Game Ideas for Adults
So now that the contractor you hired to install your new in-ground pool has done their job to satisfaction, and is paid and on their way, what are you going to do? Swim, of course! But after you've tried out your pool a few times, consider throwing the perfect summer pool party, inviting your friends to come check out your brand-new pool and have some fun, too.
However, if you've never thrown a pool party before, you might be in the market for some pool party ideas and themes. Here are a few fun yet simple pool party themes you can try.
1. Beach Party
Even though you're obviously not at the beach, why not throw a beach-based pool party? Consider mailing out invites on sea shell-shaped paper, starfish-shaped paper, or invitations with a picture of a palm tree or sunset beach.
Guests should dress as if they're headed to the beach (swimsuits, shorts, tank tops, sarongs, flip flops, big hats, sunglasses). Use beach towels, sea shells, kids' beach toys, and a fake palm tree for décor, and put toy sailboats in your pool.
Set up a bunch of lounge/lawn chairs and sun umbrellas. In-pool and poolside games should include frisbee and "beach" volleyball. Set up your BBQ and serve hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, fresh salads, fruit, and ice cream. The Beach Boys is a must for music.
2. Hawaiian Luau
A Hawaiian luau party is similar to a beach party, but with a twist. Use a tropical flower design for invitations, and write that guests must wear Hawaiian print shirts and khaki shorts (for the guys) and Hawaiian-style skirts (grass skirts or sarongs) with tank tops or bathing suit tops (or even coconuts!) for the ladies.
Greet each guest with a colorful lei for them to wear, and use leis, as well as fake tropical flowers, exotic plants, candles, and tiki torches, as decorations. For games, borrow or buy some hula hoops and have a hula-hoop contest. Serve ham, chicken, pineapple, rice, fresh salads, and lots of exotic and tropical fruits.
3. Celebrity Party
Host a poolside "celebrity" party where you can all pretend you're rich and famous, having a bash at your "mansion" and in your fancy pool. In your invitations, you can stipulate that everyone should dress up as their favorite celebrity, or you can just have them dress up fancy.
Décor can include a lot of pretty white lights strung up around your background and pool area. You can even go all out and buy some disposable cameras for your guests to pose for and take photos of each other. Your music should include a wide variety of classic hits by famous celebrity musicians. Serve fancy cocktails and appetizers.
Two other pool party themes include a movie night theme, where you'd rent a big screen and movie projector and have guests watch while floating in your pool on inflatable lounge chairs (or standard lounge chairs around the pool's edge); and an international/multicultural potluck pool party where each guest/couple would come representing a different culture in what they wear and the food they bring.
Would you love to throw a pool party this summer or next, but don't own a pool? Forget your wishful thinking and consider saving some money to hire a pool contractor to install your very own in-ground pool so you can start hosting pool parties yourself.
In the meantime, content yourself with invitations to other people's pools or consider "hosting" a pool-themed party at your local beach until your new pool is ready.
